Weekly timeline for 1968: A year of change and tumult

September 7: Women’s Liberation groups picket the Miss America Beauty Contest in Atlantic City. The protest includes symbolic destruction of items that lock women into traditional female roles and while nothing is set on fire, one comment by a protester is immortalized: the protesters “wouldn’t do anything dangerous, just a symbolic bra-burning.”

September 7: Led Zeppelin performs for the first time. At their first show, they are billed as The Yardbirds (The Yardbirds had disbanded two months earlier, and guitarist Jimmy Page formed the new group).

September 9:  Arthur Ashe defeats Tom Okker of the Netherlands to win the U.S. Open.

September 12: Albania withdraws from the Warsaw Pact after condemning the August Soviet-led invasion of Czechoslovakia.
